First, I would like to say Thank You to my support crew (Bill Morgan, Sabine and Ingo Neumann), our "Pete And Wendy Sponsors" and all the folks at 12 hrs of Temecula. Jason, you and Heather put on a great race!
I came in 3rd place (Masters 40+) at the 12 hrs of Temecula. I got in over 80 miles in about 9hrs of Mt Biking on Saturday without a rain drop. A few minutes after I stopped, loaded the bikes, the rain came. I knew this was a building race for me and I couldn't afford to tear down any muscles by pushing the pace. I decided to stay below 83% max HR for the entire race. I raced at an overall average of 76% for the entire race. Being 38 minutes back and 3 hrs ahead of 3rd (I thought), I decided that I didn't need to go on. Some of you know that I can't see to well in the dark and since the 12 hrs of Temecula was a training ride in preparation for 24hrs of Sebring Road Race on Feb 16th at Sebring, FL; I didn't need any injuries.
I wasn't strong enough for 1st place at the tempo I decided to race or for that matter if I tried (I just don't know). I was in 2nd place at 6pm with 8 laps and I was 3 laps ahead of 3rd place, so I decided to stop. What I didn't know was that there was a time/lap error on the 3rd place rider; which was 3 laps back on paper, but that was a mistake. He was only 2 laps back, but I didn’t know that. I do want to give him much KUDOS; as he stuck it out for almost all of the 12 hrs to get 9 laps and 2nd place. Do have great rides. ~Pete
